We will be joining three families in their home. They will be around their meal tables. In each home the family will focus together on the events and meaning of John 13. After the service it’s “over to you” to homes across Leeds, where you are encouraged to eat a meal with your family, where you might talk about Jesus.
Maundy Thursday is the last Thursday of Lent, before Good Friday, and followed by Sunday. The three final full days of Lent, 36 hours, covers Maundy Thursday evening, through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, which includes the Easter Vigil and ends on Easter Day.
Traditionally, Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, which modeled his commandment to love one another. “Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandatum, or commandment, reflecting Jesus’ words “I give you a new commandment.” Maundy Thursday also commemorates the Last Supper, Jesus’ final meal with his disciples during which we remember in our Holy Communion services. Finally, Maundy Thursday remembers Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, prior to his arrest.
