+ What Happens Here

20th March 2020 by laurah

We are so glad you’re interested in finding out what happens at St Luke’s. We are a busy, exciting church.

But what do we do?

We pray.

We help people connect: to God, to others and to our community.

We help people grow spiritually: with worship and prayer, with opportunities to learn more about Christian faith, with small groups for companionship and encouragement.

We engage with our community through acts of service, hire of our facilities, practical care, and social justice. We have a range of community partners we work with.

We are particularly concerned about children and young people: those at church, those in school or college, those on the streets.

We offer weddings, baptisms and funerals.

We are seeking to grow the church by planting into other parts of south Leeds.

And we offer pastoral care to anyone and everyone we come into contact with. We love, because we were first loved.

Jean-Louis Péchèr – Vicar of Hunslet

18th March 2020 by laurah

Hello! I’m Jean-Louis, the vicar of Hunslet. You can call me on 07850 701588 or email rev@pecheronline.org

Jean-Louis wrote this before his ordination in June 2019: “After attending Christ Church Upper Armley for 15 years, it is time for us to move to St Luke’s in Holbeck where I will be serving as Curate following ordination in the Church of England this June.

I was born in Belgium, but over the years have had the privilege to live, study and work in many different countries with my amazing wife, Ruth, who is British. We have four wonderful children and two delightful granddaughters. We love caring for our daughter who has complex needs and spending time with friends and family, here and abroad.

Over the years, I have been a programmer, a holiday park manager, a programme director, a pastor, a business consultant and an eternal student. I enjoy technology, reading and flying. I am really looking forward to meeting new friends and discovering Leeds 11.”

Start!

18th March 2020 by laurah

Got questions about life and the Christian faith?

If you’re looking for answers then maybe it’s time to make a Start. Normally run in groups of about 6 to 10 people, each session involves video clips, exercises, group discussion and time for reflection. Each session lasts about an hour and is free to attend.

– What’s life all about and where are we going?
– Does God exist and what is He like?
– Why is the world in such a mess?
– Who was Jesus, and is He relevant?
– What does Jesus’ death on the cross mean for me today?
– How far can I go forward with God in my life?

Start will help you discover more about God, Jesus and the journey of life.

If you are interested in attending a Start! course please speak to us.

Hunslet Gathering

22nd November 2019 by laurah

You are invited to come and join our church plant in Hunslet – the Hunslet Gathering!

We love the south of Leeds, all of it, not only our patch. And we are excited to support other churches reach out into their community with the Good News of Jesus.

If you live in LS10 (Hunslet or Belle Isle), you might be interested in the Hunslet Gathering. You can follow us on Facebook and  visit our Website find out what we are doing.

The Hunslet Gathering meets at the Involve center (next to the library) in Hunslet – Involve Learning Center, Whitfield Ave, Hunslet, Leeds LS10 2QE.

We are a growing community of families and individuals seeking to share the good news of Jesus, grow in numbers and serve the community of Hunslet by planting a new Church of England church.

We gather in the Involve center on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 3.30pm, starting formally at 3.45pm. We start with a few worship songs; hear news from people; share stories; hear a reading from the Bible; think about the reading in more detail (usually in a fun way); around tables we talk and share how the reading makes us feel; we pray; and finally we move into meal time. We ALWAYS end our gatherings with food. We aim to finish the service about 4.45pm, and eat until about 5.30pm – though these times aren’t fixed.

  • We hope that we’ll have fun and laugh together, but also share life together – the highs and lows.
  • We hope that the gathering will be a place to meet God, but also neighbours and new folk.
  • We hope that the time suits people with young families and others for whom morning services aren’t accessible.
  • We hope this will be a place for those who know God a lot and those who don’t even know if God is there
  • We hope as people attend they want to help run and contribute to the gathering – everyone involved.
  • We hope that our community will be served by coming together – we believe God wants the best for Hunslet!
The Hunslet Gathering team is growing – it’s great to see people joining in. At present, for more information feel free to contact
This church plant is being led by St Luke’s Holbeck. Here’s an article about us.
Community involvement
We are working with the council, diocese and local residents about the future of the iconic church spire. The old St Mary’s church building was demolished early 2019, leaving the spire standing alone. There has been concern regarding the future of the spire, but currently there are no plans to see the spire taken down. The hope is that an exciting partnership will emerge that safeguards the future of the historic monument, while developing creative plans to use the spire and lands.
In addition, we are seeking strong links with other churches in Hunslet: Church of the Nazarene, Baptist Church, Methodist Church and West Grange.
We support the Hunslet Gala, the work of the Involve centre and are talking to the new Community Hub about working in partnership.
